There's been a bug with using the Turkish locale... →
jacob: At some point internally, PHP converts function and class names to their lowercase equivalent. According to this page, Turkish has two forms of the letter “i”, which are apparently not interchangeable. This all, of course, means that any function or class with a capital “i” in it’s name will appear undefined when using a Turkish locale. Fun! The simplest workaround seems to be just...

Today's Meeting, Part II
So we’re now back and we’ve decided to break ourselves down into teams to handle different areas of the Exhibition planning. We’ve all settled on a “when” for the exhibition date, so we’re now faced with a concrete deadline to work towards (after all, always good to know how many feet you’re falling into the ground after skydiving without a parachute, eh?...

Today's Meeting, Part I
After administering a good deal of apprehension among the students by outlining the major tasks that’re due to be finished in the remaining four weeks of the semester, Werner gathered us all around for another session of Exhibition Planning. We’ve a title now: “Clink” We’ve a subtitle now: “See you in Helvetica” We’ve got a venue. But one thing...

Conceptual Development: Brainstorming a Name
Today, Werner’s asking us to develop a bit of a backbone for the exhibition project… starting with developing a title for our exhibition. James started by laying out a mindmap on the whiteboard, starting with the root word “Criminology”. One tiresome 45-minutes later, we settled on the name “Clink” because the word doesn’t necessary hold any positive or...

Conceptual Development: Criminal Thinkin'
CRIMINAL THEME Evidence bags, Jesse’s mates, Escape from an Institution, Asylums… just a couple of concepts currently drifting around a roflage-filled classroom at the moment. James suggested us all wearing orange or pinstriped jump suits (with our student numbers printed on the back). We could also have wardens patrolling the campus building (which would serve as the setting of a...

Dawn of the Election
We’re exactly at halfway point through Semester 1, so that means we should really get down to serious business. James has gathered together about $600 from sponsors so far… and we’re currently down to deciding the nature of the exhibition’s theme. We’ve got about four running concepts that’re down for voting at the moment: Streety - Slapped together (mash-up) ...

Jessi: “We just went out and had a little chat about how things should move forward. We’ve decided that there’s two ways to go forward. The first is by raising money. James has decided we’re going to have a sliding scale to measure the amount of funding we’ve built so it’s easier to decide what we want and what we need against the budget. He also suggested...

The Machine Rolls On...
Werner’s currently getting us to iron out our roles in the group committee, and who’s responsible for doing what. James is on the whiteboard jotting down the roles being handed out to the group members. Anna: Venue Selection / Budget James: Sponsorship Jesse: Look Pretty / Theme Consultant Andrew: Advertising, Promotion Tahlia: Catering John: Technical Bloke / Secretary ...

Pricing Matters
After the morning class break, we came back to do a bit of discussion on payment plans and pricing, and how we were going to go about financing the end-of-year event. From Werner’s Whiteboard: Venue: Free - $1000/week Catering: Free - $20/person Security: ? Advertising/Printing: Nil - $3000 Domain Name/Hosting: $250 Wine Sponsor Catering Print Sponsor

Online VS Offline Presentation
Today we explored the possibility of perhaps holding an online event by way of screening an exhibition, in lieu of anything physical. Werner got us started on thinking of some pretty abstract and “different” methods of hosting an exhibition. He mentioned that so many exhibitions follow the same system of “About The Artist > What They Do > Some of their work.” Etc. He urged us to think...

It's an AnnSlide : Nominations In For 2009
So today, the committee was elected for the Group Exhibition project of Semester 2. Matt collected class votes via e-mail and reported Jessi, Anna, Andrew, Tahlia and James as the winning finalists. Other group roles aren’t clear at this point, but my blood ran cold after I was appointed to serve as the team’s record-keeper (or rather, the “serial blogger”).
